Uber driver is suspended for shaming racist passengers who abused him and then spat on his car

An Uber driver has been suspended after he publicly shamed two passengers who abused him and spat on his car when he refused to drive them.

George Michael Gilto was working as an Uber driver in Cronulla, in Sydney’s south, when he picked up two men who got into his car with a case of Hahn SuperDry beer.

When he asked the men to put the beer in the boot of the car rather than the back seat they refused and started abusing him, prompting him to cancel the trip.

Footage shows the men questioning why Mr Gilto cancelled the ride with one of them saying: ‘We’ve got to go to Marrickville dude, it’s a big ride’.

Mr Gilto said he did not care about the money before the man holding the case of beer called him ‘aggressive’ as they started to get out of the car.

‘You’re a peasant mate, you’re a f**king peasant,’ the man on his phone says.

‘Hey, you’re working on a f**king Friday night look at the f***ing car you’re driving you f**king loser c**t.’

‘F**k out of here.’

The man holding the beer says: ‘You’re a full on dirty Arab c**t hey’.

The other man tells his friend he’s being racist before saying: ‘You’re not a dirty Arab – you’re just a f***ing scumbag’.

After the men finally get out and began to walk away, one of the men spits on the car.

The video shows police talking to Mr Gilto after fining both men $550 each.

‘They got into your car and they were treating you in a manner that you shouldn’t have to put up with,’ a police officer can be heard saying.

‘Police came and agreed with your side of the story and gave them both a $550 ticket and told them to piss off out of the area.’

Mr Gilto uploaded the post to Tik Tok and Instagram and quickly received more than 81,000 likes and thousands of comments in support.

‘That’s horrible mate sorry you had to go through this, you should be proud of the way you handled yourself,’ one Tik Tok user wrote.

‘So sorry you had to get treated like that, no one should put up with racism,’ another commented.

Just two days after uploading the video to his social media accounts, Uber contacted Mr Gilto telling him his employment had been suspended.

‘Uber have sent me an email telling me the passenger I had reported that I uploaded an image of them so Uber is saying to remove it,’ he said in a follow up video.

Mr Gilto said the company gave him an ultimatum to remove the video or lose his job with the drive-sharing service.

He shared two screenshots which he claims were from the email sent him following the suspension of his account.

‘There has been a report from a user of the app that you may have uploaded personal footage taken in an Uber trip to a public forum without their consent,’ the supposed email reads.

‘Because of this, we have to temporarily removed your access to the app.’

The email encouraged Mr Gilto to read up on community guidelines, in particular a section called: ‘Why drivers can lose access to Uber’.

He was also told to delete the video in order to restore his access to the service.

Mr Gilto also claims the two men in the video appear to still be allowed to use the app.

Uber denied Mr Gilto’s accusations and told Daily Mail Australia his account was suspended for completely unrelated matters.

A spokeswoman for the business shared a statement which confirmed the incident was investigated in late 2019.

‘Discriminatory or abusive behaviour is not tolerated on the Uber app and is unacceptable anywhere… This incident has no place in our society.

‘The safety and wellbeing of our driver-partners is important to us. Both driver-partners and riders deserve to feel safe, comfortable and respected when using the app and our community guidelines outline these standards.’

Daily Mail Australia has also contacted Mr Gildo and NSW Police for comment.
