IN THE NEWS: APPLE ANNOUNCES TWEAKS IN LINEUP
UNDATED (AP) — There are two big changes coming to Apple gear: one that makes its phones and tablets easier to use — and another that swaps out the “engine” that makes its Mac computers run. Apple is rolling out a new operating system, known as iOS 14. It will have ways to help users manage their apps better — and upgrade its digital assistant, Siri. As for its Macs, Apple is switching to a new type of chips to power those devices. The chips will be made by Apple itself — part of a phase-out of the Intel chips that have powered the Macs for the past decade and a half.
IN THE NEWS: PATAGONIA ANNOUNCES AD BOYCOTT OF FACEBOOK, INSTAGRAM
UNDATED (AP) — Another outdoor gear company says it’s putting an ad freeze on Facebook and Instagram. Patagonia says it won’t place ads on the social networking site and its image-driven app for the month of July. It’s part of a protest in which companies say Facebook hasn’t done enough to stop the spread of false information and propaganda. Patagonia joins The North Face and REI, which announced similar boycotts recently. Last week, civil rights groups called on large advertisers to pull ads from Facebook next month to nudge the site toward doing more to curb racist and violent content.
ON THE WEB: LYFT SETTLES ALLEGATIONS ON ACCESSIBILITY
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Lyft has agreed to settle claims that it violated federal law. The ride hailing app firm has been accused of violating the Americans With Disabilities Act. At issue are claims that some Lyft drivers refused to give rides to people using folding walkers or collapsible wheelchairs in the Los Angeles area. The settlement will see Lyft pay between $4,000 and $30,000 to four riders — and shell out $40,000 in penalties. But in the settlement agreement, Lyft denies it’s subject to the Americans With Disabilities Act — and says it doesn’t discriminate against anyone.
